The short answer
In these 12 makeup ads, 6 promise one product that does several jobs or beats another option, 5 add an offer such as buy one, get one free, 3 are written for one specific audience, and 2 put a person or a tip on camera.
9 of the 12 are videos: makeup is easier to believe when you see it applied. Run time is a signal, not proof: the Ad Library shows no results.

A makeup ad built on these patterns (illustration)

How we chose these ads
We searched Meta's Ad Library on October 31, 2026, for mascara, lipstick, foundation and concealer, with the United States, active ads and English selected. From the results we kept ads run by the brand itself (no marketplaces or resellers), that had been running for at least 30 days, one per brand, and with a mix of formats and angles.
How long an ad has run is a signal, not proof: advertisers usually stop ads that lose money, but the Ad Library shows no sales, spend or results for these ads, so none of them is presented as a proven winner.
Patterns in these makeup ads
They show the result on a face. Lashes, a lip shade or concealer under the eyes are hard to judge from a product shot, so most of these ads are videos of application, a before and after, or a person explaining a two-minute routine.
They also simplify the decision: one pencil instead of several concealers, a balm that covers and cares for skin, a lash kit instead of a salon visit. And several speak to one audience by name, brown skin tones, mature skin, healthcare workers, so the right buyer recognizes themself in the first line.
Makeup ad ideas you can use
Film the product being applied, in daylight, on a real face, and open on the result rather than the packaging. If the product replaces other products or a salon visit, say so in the first line, and back it with a short list of what it does.
Name your audience when the product is made for them, and give a person a voice: a founder, a makeup artist or a creator explaining a tip feels like advice, not an ad. Add an offer only after the result is clear.

Should makeup ads be videos?
Most of these are: 9 of the 12. Application and before-and-after are easier to believe in motion, but a strong close-up image can work for a shade.
